Interview mit unserem Wellnessleiter Mate

How long have you been working for the Gerber Hotels?
I am currently in my 3rd season with the Gerber Family. In my first two seasons I was employed as a masseur, but this year I am working as a wellness manager.

What does it look like to work at Gerber Hotels?
If you do your work well, you’ll have a stable job and a substantial income, along with professional development.
You’ll have the opportunity to meet lots of people, make new contacts and friendships and enjoy the benefits, opportunities and privileges of being part of the Gerber Hotels Team. To experience what it’s like to be part of a team of 200 people.

What do you like best about your job?
First of all, it is very important that I love the profession I work in every day! This is the first step towards appreciating the opportunities and optimal working and living conditions which has been offered by the Gerber Family.

Personally, I can list several things.
I like the work schedule of the wellness team. After lunch, we start our shift at 11:45 and finish at 19:15, followed by dinner. This means that our mornings are completely free as well as our evenings, giving us the opportunity to relax, to do some active or passive recreation or to move out of the village.

The relaxed wellness environment, where there is just a little chance of any negative impact or stress factor, is also very positive.

We have more less opportunity to schedule massages for us, so we can split the treatments evenly among the 4-person team members to regenerate, avoiding over-whelming, straining or just burning out.
As a massage therapist, I’m sure you know how physically, mentally and energetically demanding a treatment can be, but here you can avoid it.

In addition, the working conditions are good and working together as a real team, we can easily overcome everyday obstacles.

What qualities should you have to work as a masseur?
First of all, professional qualifications are very important.
You can work as a Swedish masseur with 2-4 years of experience, but it is a big advantage if you are familiar with some medical treatments, such as lymphatic massage or even foot reflexology.

Other important qualities are some Personality characteristic like kindness, openness, good communication skills, patience, empathy and flexibility.

All of this makes it easier to work and communicate with customers.

Tell us something about your career?
I am in my 7th year in the profession.
I have worked in spas, health centres and 2 private studios as a physiotherapist, foot reflexologist and nutritionist.
A few years ago, however, I decided at a young age that I would have the opportunity to pursue this path in the future, but now I would like a change of scenery.
Thanks to my parents I found Kühtai and the Gerber Family where I am in my 3rd season.
For the first 2 seasons I was only involved in massage and maintaining the spa with the rest of the Wellness Team.
But at the end of the previous season I had a meeting with our boss, Jasmin Gerber. Thanks to her offer I can spend this season as a manager.

What are the challenges in your job?
Most of all, I would highlight solving unexpected problems.
Personally, I enjoy challenges, things that are out of my comfort zone and can make me feel uncomfortable at the time, but it is the best way to improve, to deal with problematic situations and to control my emotions and thoughts.
Problem-solving skills, quick change of perspective, communication, flexibility, self-control, creativity and resilience. All of this can be quickly developed through this job and I find it the most challenging and enjoyable for myself.

In addition, dealing with IT problems, responding quickly to guests’ questions, concerns and requests, assessing problems in the wellness department and communicating with other department managers can sometimes be unexpected challenges. However, if you have at least one of the aforementioned skills, these obstacles can be easily overcome.

Any advice for newcomers?
Don’t be afraid to change and try something new.
Especially if you want to be part of a big, cohesive team, Team Gerber is for You!
